Teams spent Wednesday setting up five medical tents in different spots at Churchill Downs to provide basic first aid to those who need it over the next few days.

Norton Health Care director of sports health Sam Zuege said health care teams will simply provide bandages, sunscreen and aloe to most passersby.

“You know, basic wound care for those folks who have worn the wrong shoes or decided that something might look great but doesn’t feel great after those eight hours,” Zuege said.

However, EMTs from Alpha Event Medicine will also be on-hand in case fans have more serious illnesses or injuries.

In addition, Norton Health Care is also providing care for jockeys. Its doctors and nurses are staffing a new jockey clinic between the Executive Gate and Gate 1.

“There’s been a lot of focus over the number of years that horse racing’s been going on, on the horses, and while they’re caliber athletes of none else, those folks that mount them and run and ride are the ones, too, that are really putting a toll on their body,” Zuege said. “So, we’re excited to bring our service line, our preventative health care to those folks who make an enjoyable event for so many people to highlight and enjoy here.”

Norton’s on-site jockey clinic will be in place during spring and fall meets at Churchill Downs. The health care company is also offering medical services and the families all year.

“We know that a lot of them are moving around the country,” Zuege said. “They’re at different tracks different times of the year, and we’re really hoping that they make their medical home here, that we’re able to help provide that care for them not just here on the track, but we’re excited to be able to welcome the breadth of what Norton Health Care has to offer so they have the opportunity to seek world class health care right here.”
