LOUISVILLE, Ky. — President Joe Biden met with Ukranian offcials Saturday as the war between Russia and Ukraine is still ongoing. The president focused on how Western allies will address Russia’s aggression.
In Louisville, Ukraine natives like Olga Savina are doing whatever they can to help those in their home country.
“I moved to America when I was 10 years old with my mom and most of my family stayed back behind, everybody else stayed back behind,” Savina said.
With the war between Russia and Ukraine, Savina decided to take a stand. Savina created a non-profit called Slava Ukraini International where proceeds are sent directly to individuals on the ground in Ukraine.
“I took action with my friends and we started a nonprofit organization called Slava Ukraini, which means 'glory to Ukraine,' which you might hear in some chants," Savina said.
In the past month, Savina has organized a rally and created different fundraiser ideas to raise money. For Savina, it hits close to home as her family and friends are still back home.
“I speak with them on a daily basis and honestly, this is the hardest part of talking to them, because every single day I never know when the last day of me talking to them is,” Savina said.
It means the world to Savina knowing she’s not in this fight alone.
“I see people who are going through a tough time because they have pain in their eyes, I see people who just want to help when they don't have to help and this is what community looks like, this is what it means to stand in solidarity and this is really what it's about,” Savina said.
Savina is planning another event for May 6 at the Art Sanctuary in Louisville as an effort to continue raising money for her home country.
