LEXINGTON, Ky. — It was an upset many fans on the University of Kentucky’s campus will remember. Sophomore Tina Hristova said there are things the boys on the men’s basketball team could’ve done better after losing 79-85 against Saint Peter’s.

“We should not have waited until the last twenty seconds just to drive the ball and then not make it because then it goes to overtime and bad things happen,” Hristova said.

The team was the No. 2 seed in the first round of the tournament—and a loss like this is very rare. The Wall Street Journal reports the University of Kentucky is known to spend millions more on the men’s basketball team than Saint Peter’s spends on its athletic department in a year.

Despite the loss, Hristova says they’re a good team.

“So I think we just peaked really early and never recovered from the injuries that happened and we weren’t able to play to our full potential,” Hristova said.

Ken Jewell said now it’s time to rally behind the girl’s team. They play Princeton on Saturday.

Jewell and Hristova said they are looking ahead to next season to see how the boys do.

“We have older guys who are leaving and with new players coming in, just training them more and becoming a team as a whole,” Hristova said.

“I think that’s one of the things that can hurt us for tournament time—not having that depth and experience and I love having that so hopefully some of the older guys will stick around so we have some more experience on the floor,” Jewell said.
