LEXINGTON, Ky. — After the winter snow and ice storms, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is warning people to be aware of the impact the weather has had on the road conditions.

What You Need To Know

  • Winter weather may create or expand potholes in Kentucky roads

  • Automotive Repair shops are seeing an increase during winter months

  • Car Masters recommends checking for alignment and tire pressure and balance

  • Potholes can cause dangerous road conditions for cars

Creating and expanding potholes is one of the major issues one Automotive Repair shop in Lexington says is their biggest concern.

Tim Morris, service adviser for Car Masters in Lexington says winter months can be a big month for auto repair shops.

“We See a lot of damage from potholes but the ice and the snow, a lot of sliding and that’s just something that’s out of your control,” Morris said.

Morris says there are many factors affecting road conditions. Such as changes in temperatures, snow, ice and salt, creating possible potholes on the roadways.

“The freezing, and the thawing of the roads, with the moisture, the constant pounding of the cars on it. If you have a small pothole, it can get large quickly,” Morris said.

With the combination of the used car shortages and winter damages, their appointments have been increasing by about 25 cars a week.

“We do see an increase in business. When there’s a lot of snow, a lot of ice, especially people sliding and hitting curbs,” Morris said.

Morris says if you hit a pothole, check your alignment and watch for changes in your tire balance and pressure.

“If you feel like it’s not driving correctly, whether it’s pulling one way or another or you’re having a vibration. When you’re not in alignment, sometimes the steering wheels are off centered, those things right there, pay attention,” Morris said.

Morris says the best way to avoid damage to your vehicle is driving slowly, and keeping an eye out for potholes, helping maintain a safe vehicle this winter.
