LONDON, Ky. — Some people are lucky enough to take "snow days" when winter weather rolls in, but Kentucky farmers actually have extra work to do when it snows.
"My family raised cattle," said Glenn Williams, owner of S&J Cattle Farm in London. "I've been farming on my own since I was 17 years old."
Williams was out early on Sunday to get his animals fed before winter weather rolled through. He said he was out when it was just sleeting, and thankfully got his feed out before the snow came.
"When the weather gets bad we try to set out extra feed," Williams added. That's how they make sure animals are getting their food no matter the weather.
Snow is expected to coat central and eastern Kentucky with several inches of accumulation Sunday into Monday morning. Williams hopes it isn't too bad in his neck of the woods.
"We're hoping it don't get too bad, because we've gotta feed our animals and take care of everything. Hopefully the roads don't get too slick," he said.
Right now is when a lot of farmers are getting ready to calve, and Williams said cows getting ready to have their babies in this mess makes it a difficult process.
"The tougher the weather is, the tougher it is to get that done," he said.
In the face of it all, Williams and other Kentucky farmers get the work done. Because it needs to be done.
No matter what, we gotta get these things done, get everything fed, got hay, water tanks are flowing and running
"We gotta get these things done, get everything fed, water tanks flowing and running," he said. "We're blessed to be able to do what we do and live in the great country we live in. We've got it really good."
