DAWSON SPRINGS, Ky. — An urgent call is being made for more volunteers in Hopkins County.

What You Need To Know

  • Volunteers are being requested in Hopkins County

  • Volunteers are working to tarp roofs to prevent further damage

  • Anyone interested in volunteering may meet at the emergency management staging area at 5715 Charleston Road each day beginning at 8 a.m. CST

County Judge Executive Jack Whitfield said they began taking volunteers Thursday, and continue to need more whether it’s skill-based or to take phone calls, but the main objective remains to beat the rain.

House after house is in need of work, with covers needed to go on damaged roofs across the entire community.

Since Saturday, Nathan Rodgers has gone town to town offering his services. He’s with Hopkins Gutter and Construction and is teaming with new people each day.

“You go down one street, you think everything’s done,” Rodgers said. “You go down a street and there's a whole line of houses that need to be tarped, fixed. Once the rain hits everybody’s stuff's ruined. It’s kind of a rush to get everything done.”

Volunteers were hopping rooftop to rooftop, and houses on the other side of the street had different teams doing the same thing.

“I feel obligated to be here every day and try to do just what I can,” he said. “So we've been here that’s what we do.

Rodgers grew up in the region, and seeing Dawson Springs in its current state is hard to comprehend.

“It’s hard to fathom,” he said. “You know, you could never imagine something being this bad. Words can’t describe ‘til you’re here and you see that’s something that you can’t really, it’s hard to explain.”

He finds it hard to explain the damage and piles of debris that have ruined homes up and down the streets.
