MAYFIELD, Ky. — Brian Toon stood near two shampoo bowls and a shelf filled with containers of beauty supplies, surrounded by debris.

What You Need To Know

  • The Beauty Shop in downtown Mayfield was one of many buildings that was in the tornado's path

  • Brian Toon and his wife, Korey, opened the salon last June

  • They're grateful the tornado didn't damage their home, which was two miles away, and said they plan to rebuild the salon if they can

Days ago, you might have found someone getting their hair washed there, at The Beauty Shop in downtown Mayfield.

Toon’s wife Korey owned the salon, which opened in June of last year.

Like many other businesses nearby, it was destroyed in a deadly tornado Friday night.

"She’s pretty tore up about it," said Toon. "This was her lifelong dream ... to have her own shop, so yeah, she’s pretty upset."

In what was the bathroom, a mirror hangs on one of the few walls still standing.

With an excavator and chainsaw, Toon and a team of friends and co-workers worked Tuesday to clear out a massive tree that fell in the parking lot.

"I don’t think it’s all soaked in yet," said Toon. "We’re just trying to do a little bit of cleanup, just to feel like I’m doing something, I guess."

Justin Burcham, who works with Toon, was eager to find a way to help.

“You feel helpless and you see all the devastation and you want to do something to help," he said. "And you don’t know what to do and you just start wherever you can. He’s somebody that I knew, so he needs help and that’s why I’m here ... The first time I saw this stuff, it literally made me sick to my stomach. It was just unreal to see the amount of devastation that’s here."

Toon said he’s grateful their home, two miles away, wasn’t damaged, and if they can, they plan to rebuild the salon.
