NEWPORT, Ky. — Newport Racing and Gaming opened a new 14,000 square foot section Wednesday. The new section is smoking-friendly, creating two distinct areas within the facility.

What You Need To Know

  • Newport Racing and Gaming opened a new section on Wednesday

  • The new section will be smoking-friendly, giving smokers and non-smokers each their own space

  • This comes a little more than a year after the facility opened

  • The facility is open from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., even on holidays

The Churchill Downs-owned facility moved 150 of its existing historical horse racing machines to the new area to make everyone comfortable, and have a chance at winning big.

“Previously before today’s expansion opened, we had 500 games in a much smaller space, and if you can imagine, the amount of space you could walk through the aisles and walk through the games was like kind of limited, and a little bit cramped,” said Director of Marketing Gary Pecorello.

This expansion comes a little more than a year after the facility opened in October of last year. Dee Bell has been a regular since then.

“I’ve been coming since they opened. I think it’s amazing that we’re doing this, and we’re barely a year in, and I think it’s a great opportunity for their players to enjoy their smoking area, and for some of us to enjoy the non-smoking area,” Bell said. “I just bet low, and I come for fun. I’m not going to become a millionaire. It’s great when you win, but it’s nice to be able to relax, play the games, and have a lot of fun.”

The new space will also includes a bar, and allows a stage area for live entertainment in the non-smoking gaming area. Since opening, the nearly $40 million project has created about 70 permanent jobs.

For families looking to shake things up this holiday season, Newport Racing and Gaming will be open, even on holidays.

“The night before Thanksgiving, friends and family are gathering. It’s a great night to go out and have a good time with the family. Everyone celebrates on thanksgiving day, and then when dinner’s over, people are looking for things to do, and a lot of places are closed on thanksgiving evening. We’re open,” Pecorello said.

Pecorello said Newport Racing and Gaming is hoping to start live entertainment next month with some local acts.

Newport Racing and Gaming is an extension of the racing license associated with Turfway Park in Florence. The facility operates Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.
