BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — There's no age requirement to be a good Samaritan, and that's evident as 11-year-old Marleigh Riley has created her own homeless drive for those in need this winter.

What You Need To Know

  • One Kentucky middle schooler is crafting care packages for the homeless

  • Marleigh attends W.R. McNeil Elementary

  • This is her second year of the drive

  • She gave out 12 care packages last year

From nonperishables to hand sanitizer, she is making care packages to give out to the less fortunate. This is the second year of her project and she hopes each year it continues to grow.

“The idea hit me to just make homeless packs and I went around to the teachers at my school and told some family members about it," said Riley. "I got $120 dollars from my teachers and it was awesome.”

Social media has been a huge help in securing donations for the drive. Many have donated money for items while others have donated food. She has even surpassed her target dollar amount.

“Donations money wise have been really good," said Riley. "We made our goal already which was only $250 and we reached that so it’s been pretty good."

Last year Riley handed out about a dozen care packages. This year she has ordered 50 packages, with room to spare if more are needed. Each is hand made by her, with a little assistance from her mother Autumn Grinstead.

"Last year I helped her organize other then that she takes over and does it on her own." said Grinstead. "We will drive down the road and let her hand out bags or if I hear a community event we will go there.”

Donations for the project will end Dec. 1. If you would like to donate you can here.
