LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Change Today, Change Tomorrow carries products from local Black-owned businesses with the aim of helping those entrepreneurs succeed.

What You Need To Know

  • Change Today, Change Tomorrow moved Pocket Change to its new storefront in the Highlands on Bardstown Road in May

  • It carries products from dozens of Black-owned businesses

  • Mahogany Livers' business, Mindful Moments with Mo, partners with Pocket Change

  • Livers says carrying her products at the store saves her time and gives her business exposure

Mahogany Livers, owner of Mindful Moments with Mo, comes to the Pocket Change storefront on Bardstown Road a few times per month.

"I come back with my products that need to be replenished," said Livers.

While she's not here everyday, her bracelets, necklaces, essential oils and more, are always on the shelves.

“Still being able to gain revenue from my business has been really helpful because I’m not having to do the deliveries," Livers added.

She said she'd love to spend all her time growing her business, but with working a different full-time job and parenting a toddler, it's just not in the cards right now. Having the chance to sell her products at Change Today, Change Tomorrow's store, Pocket Change, freed up valuable time.

“At first, I was meeting up with clients and delivering bracelets here and there," said Livers. "Having this space, I’m able to send them here not only to support my business, but other Black-owned businesses as well.”

Ali Gautier with Change Today, Change Tomorrow said Pocket Change partners with dozens of Black entrepreneurs just like Livers.

They get to showcase their products on the popular Bardstown Road corridor without paying the premium location rent. In return, Pocket Change keeps a portion of the profit.

“You fill out a Google form telling us about your business. If you sell things like candles, that we can buy in bulk, we will do it that way. If you are an artist, we do it off a percentage," said Gautier.

She said it's a win-win situation. The more the businesses at Pocket Change succeed, the better it is for the whole community.

“It’s something the city needs, right. The majority of businesses owned in Louisville are white-owned businesses. That just doesn’t make sense with how Louisville is actually reflected. Everyone deserves representation, so being able to be apart of making that happen… It’s incredible,” said Gautier.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer's office said despite Black residents accounting for 23.4% of Louisville's population, only 2.4% of businesses in Louisville are Black-owned.

Pocket Change also hosts business workshops to help ensure these entrepreneurs succeed. Livers said she learned a lot about marketing, customer service and time management from those classes.

Being able to point to her success moving product at Pocket Change, Livers was able to secure Mindful Moments with Mo a contract to sell her products in another store in West Louisville. She said it means a lot to have her products on display in different locations in the city.

In addition to her products, she offers services like yoga instruction, meditation and essential oil workshops. She wants her business to make a difference in the world.

“I want to break to break the stigma of mental health. If I could create a space that will start that conversation and get people to start their own journey, then I would have lived my dream,” said Livers.

All of this is getting her one step closer to her goal of becoming a full-time business owner, and maybe one day opening her own wellness studio.

Pocket Change is open Sunday through Thursday from noon-7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from noon-9 p.m. It's located at 1753 Bardstown Road in Louisville.
