BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Dr. Brian Humble works in the internal medicine office at Greenview Hospital but he also takes the streets weekly to help serve the homeless as part of HOTEL INC's street medicine program.
HOTEL INC is an organization created in 1981 to help poor and homeless families in Warren County.
Humble is a Kentucky native and spends each Tuesday seeking and checking on the homeless living on the streets. He says addiction and homelessness are something he personally grew up.
“I have personal and family experience with mental illness and drug addiction and homelessness," said Humble "As a Christian this is what I do this is how I serve Christ.”
Humble also carries around brown paper bag lunches as well. Stocked with fruits and other nutritious snacks for people to have. Sometimes his adventures are as simple as a basic checkup while others provide genuine care with medicine. Over his five years he's served hundreds of homeless individuals.
"I’ve probably served over 160 homeless people and personally probably dozens out here," said Humble "We're still a small community but every place has their homeless.”
As the leader of he program Humble also helps them register for housing as well. He isn't just their doctor but also serves as a confidant for them as well.
"Most of these people just want to talk to anybody they can," said Humble "They have been looked down upon their whole lives by society and the cops mess with them so we just try to be their friend."
Hotel Inc's. Street Medicine program goes out every Tuesday and Thursday. They are always looking for new people to serve as well.
"These people are so grateful for anything from medical care to bottled water," said Humble "Nobody cares or gives them anything they only take from them so that is why I am so big on being out here."
