LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Urban Bourbon half marathon may have wrapped up, but it’s inspiring some people to take part in more long-distance running.
One Louisville woman is among the many and she finished her first half marathon at the age of 48.
Her journey to long-distance running started just recently.
“About a month ago, early part of the month last night,” said Tonya Trumbo, as she recalls how she picked up running. “Yes, I started working on the 5K.
From that 5K, then came the 10K and now Trumbo completed a half marathon on Saturday in downtown Louisville.
“13.1 miles when you do it, it's a big feat,” Trumbo said.
It’s a big feat that came with its own mental obstacles.
“It's not only a physical challenge that you have to get over, but it is mind, body, spirit working together to get you to that finish line because, you know, at any given time, you, you may just want to give up,” Trumbo said.
But through motivation from Trumbo’s cousin, Lesa Cobb, the duo reached the finish line.
“One of the best accomplishments, I’ve made in my lifetime,” Trumbo said.
The 48-year-old is joining the many who've recently picked up running.
“I just recently picked up long-distance at age 48 I guess I should say, right before my 49th birthday I started running a lot more long-distance,” Trumbo said.
A recent study by World Athletics, revealed more people have taken up running during the COVID-19 pandemic, and their intentions are to continue running once the pandemic is over.
“It’s a powerful moment that you're able to obtain and capture and just take in everything,” Trumbo said. “And it’s a little be overwhelming to know that you’ve made and this is another accompaniment in your life especially doing it for the very first time.”
Creating an exhilarating feeling for Trumbo who crossed the half-marathon for the first time no matter the age.
Both Trumbo and her cousin have plans to participate in more marathons this year.
