GEORGETOWN, Ky. — One year before the pandemic, Desserts By Rebecca opened in Georgetown and during the past two years they have been working to spread positivity through their cakes and baked goods.
To Rebecca Maupin, baking is a passion that started long ago.
“I always loved doing it with my mom and my grandma and they always have the best recipes, a lot of which we use here now,” Maupin said.
Three years ago, Maupin opened up a little shop in Georgetown after baking out of her home for more than 10 years. She says opening up before the pandemic has come with challenges, but it has also given her an opportunity to make an impact.
“I think most people were really grateful that we did stay open, because I know it was either one of two things. You either wanted alcohol or you wanted sugar, so we got to provide that sugar for people and it was just like a comfort kind of thing,” Maupin said.
Because of her grab-and-go shop, Maupin was able to keep her shop open throughout the pandemic, and was one of the lucky restaurants to keep all of her employees and loyal customers. Because of the pandemic Maupin started creating colorful cakes and hopes her mission to spread joy and sugar helps her community through these difficult times.
“I just think the community is more than just, you know, the people who live here, it's the people who work here too. And you need to take care of those people because if there was no pub, if there were no other businesses downtown, then we wouldn't survive either,” Maupin said.
By the end of the year, Maupin plans to expand the business with a food truck for events and celebrations.
