Dozens of Kentuckians called for more reproductive health rights.
“I’m here speaking, representing Sexy Sex-ed and rural Eastern Kentucky, which is where I’m from,” said Shaylan Clark, one of the speakers.
She attended the rally fighting for more access in rural parts of the state.
“A lot of the times, I feel like we get looked over when it comes to these issues. And so my point of being here is to show that people in rural areas of the state also care we are also fighting. We just want help resources and some connection,” Clark said.
She and Erin Smith with the Kentucky Health Justice Network said their mission is to raise awareness against House Bill 91.
“It’s important anytime that someone else is making a decision about your body it is important. You deserve to have all the information, you deserve to have all the knowledge that you can get, you deserve to know what's going on decisions that are being made, with or without you,” Smith said.
The bill is up for a vote next year which permanently bans abortion in the state and makes it not accessible.
“A big part of this is just one making people aware that this is happening,” Smith said. “So, then the second part is making sure we can mobilize people to just talk to their friends, talk to their legislators talk to their neighbors and let people know what's going on. And that, no, we're not OK with this. No one should ever be OK with those no one should ever be OK with someone dictating what they can and cannot do with their body.”
State Representative Savannah Maddox (R) District 61 is one of the many co-sponsors of the bill. She shared the following statement.
“In the 2022 General Election, citizens of the Commonwealth will have an opportunity to vote on a constitutional amendment which would ensure that nothing in the Kentucky Constitution could be interpreted to secure or protect a right to abortion or require the funding of abortion. I co-sponsored this legislation because I firmly believe that protecting unborn life is an essential component of restoring human dignity. Kentuckians will now have an opportunity to make their voices heard on this issue, and I will be working to get the message out in hopes of making Kentucky the most Pro-Life state in the nation.”
Kentuckians will vote on House Bill 91 in the next General Election in 2022.
