KENTUCKY — Last Halloween may have left a bad taste in the mouth of Kentucky's trick-or-treaters since it coincided with the fall surge of the COVID-19 pandemic, but this year could turn out much sweeter.

According to data from CandyStore, Reese's Cups are set to be the most popular type of Halloween candy in the Commonwealth this year. If you're expecting trick-or-treaters, you should stock up on those peanut butter pumpkins!

Runner-up sugary snacks this year were Swedish Fish and Hot Tamales. Swedish Fish came out on top last year, but was dethroned this year by Reese's Cups, which were found to be the most popular treat in the U.S. North Carolina, Florida and California also gave Reese's Cups the gold.

The data was formulated by Google Trends and was placed on a map to reveal what candy each state loves the most, according to Candystore.com. Data from the past 14 years (2007-2021) helps evaluate the candy sales in the weeks leading up to Halloween.

While many trick-or-treaters didn't knock on many doors last Halloween due to the surging COVID-19 pandemic, the National Retail Federation said candy sales should increase this year by $600 million to hit $3 billion. Halloween spending sales are expected to reach $10.14 billion this year.

It's estimated that 172 million Americans celebrate Halloween and among those who celebrate, 96% will purchase some candy.
