LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Emergency responders will participate in large-scale counter-terrorism training Friday in Louisville and southern Indiana.

Operation Thunderstruck will take place at 9 a.m. at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. There will also be similar training Friday morning in southern Indiana at the Clark County Fairgrounds, the Jeffersonville Riverstage, the Jeffersonville Police Department and the Hobby Lobby parking lot off Lewis and Clark Parkway.

If you see or hear heavy police activity in those areas, do not be alarmed.

During the training, more than 350 first responders and officials will participate in exercises to learn how to deter and respond to things such as terror attacks and mass shooting situations. The participants include members of federal, state and local government, non-governmental organizations and the private sector.

“The safety and security of our residents and employees is the No. 1 priority for Louisville Metro Government, and it’s critical we provide our first responders and officials with the training and tools necessary to ensure they’re prepared and well-trained,” said Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. “Thank you to the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management, Kentucky Office of Homeland Security, and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security for their partnership and cooperation as we work to ensure our region is prepared for a seamless, coordinated response to any major incident.”

Operation Thunderstruck is funded through a $2.3 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
