LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Gun violence continues to be an issue for much of the nation, and Louisville is no exception. Last year according to Louisville police data, there were 587 non-fatal shooting victims – the youngest was just 5 months old.
What You Need To Know
- According to LMPD data, in 2020 there were 587 non-fatal shooting victims
- In 2020, Ocean Robertson was the youngest victim of gun violence in Louisville
- Robertson’s grandmother Sherry Ancrum takes care of her
- Christopher 2X, peace activist of Louisville, is advocating for the Ancrum family
For Sherry Ancrum, days like today are filled with visits to Norton Children’s Hospital, that is because almost one year ago her grandduaghter Ocean Robertson was a victim of gun violence.
“There was not anything I could do besides cry, cry, cry,” said Ancrum.
Almost nine months later, baby Ocean’s grandmother Sherry Ancrum is still healing from Dec. 5, 2020, which is the day her daughter’s life was taken and her life changed forever.
“She can not sit up without falling over in a regular stroller, it is just so much I have to do with Baby Ocean,” said Ancrum.
Baby Ocean sits in a specialized stroller that keeps her head from leaning side to side. Ancrum dedicates 24 hours of care to her granddaughter and has reduced her hours at work to one day a week.
“Now that I look back on that picture with Baby Ocean, look now she has really really come a long way. Even though the outside [of her] looks good, we know there is alot going on inside,” said Ancrum.
The Ancrum family knows there is more progress to make for their family to heal, that is why peace activist Christopher 2X is helping them in that fight.
“Nobody can not say that the emotional pull from a child, who has been impacted in such a devastating way [from gunshot wound to the head] does not take an emotional toll on you,” said Christopher 2X.
“It tears me up because I know the feelings, I know how it feels to lose a child. I do not think no parent should have to bury their child,” said Ancrum.
As of last week, there were 449 non-fatal shootings that took place in metro-Louisville during this year. If you would like to follow baby Ocean’s journey, go to Christopher 2X's Facebook page.
