The iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade will be back on city streets this holiday season, and the public will once again be able to view it in person.

Macy's says the city will be in charge of managing the public viewing locations, and will follow the most up-to-date health guidelines.

The company says the specific locations where the public will be able to view the parade will be announced in November.

A Thanksgiving Day parade was held last year, but it was kept to the area in front of Macy’s flagship store and aimed at a television audience instead of live crowds. Performances featuring Broadway stars were taped ahead of the Thanksgiving Day broadcast, and no performers under 18 were permitted.

Macy's says health and safety restrictions will be in place on its end of the production. All volunteer participants and staff will be vaccinated. They will also be required to wear face coverings, though there will be exceptions for performers. Social distancing protocols will also be put into place.

The company says the number of participants in this year’s parade will be reduced by about 10% to 20%, a much smaller reduction than last year, where the number of participants was cut by about 88%.

Marching bands, cheer squads and other groups who were invited last year but could not participate will do so this year, according to the company.

Macy’s says it will release details on the exact locations the public can view the parade from in November.

The company says it is also considering the return of its balloon inflation event the night before the parade, which was canceled last year amid the pandemic.
