FRANKFORT, Ky. — More Kentucky parents send their kids off for the first day of the new school year, the Kentucky State Fair kicks off and there's a chance to see some top international soccer stars. Those are just some of the things happening this week in Kentucky.

Back to school

Spectrum News 1 continues the back-to-school coverage this week as more Kentucky students embark on the new school year.

Whether they are going back tomorrow in Glasgow County or Wednesday in Boone County, masks will be required. That is due to Gov. Andy Beshear's executive order requiring masks in all Kentucky schools for 30 days. It was further reinforced by the Kentucky Board of Education ruling masks will be required for much of this school year unless the board decides otherwise at a later date.

Lexington ARPA funds

Lexington continues to seek input on how to spend $120 million from the federal American Rescue Plan Act. People can weigh in at one of three public hearings on the matter this week.

The meeting times and locations are as follows:

  • Monday, Aug. 16: 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Whitaker YMCA (Meeting will take place under the open-air pavilion)
  • Wednesday, Aug. 18: noon-1 p.m. via Zoom (Meeting ID: 815 2739 4076)
  • Thursday, Aug. 19: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Lexington Public Library Eastside Branch (3000 Blake James Dr.)

Women's Cup

Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville is playing host to an international soccer tournament. The Women's Cup kicks off with two games Wednesday. 

Global soccer powerhouses FC Bayern Munich and Paris-Saint Germain (PSG) have arrived in Louisville for the inaugural Women's Cup. The two international clubs will join the two National Women’s Soccer League members Racing Louisville and Chicago Red Stars. The four-team, four-game tournament will start as Bayern and PSG kick off at 5 p.m. and Racing and Chicago kick off at 7:30 p.m. The third-place game will take place Saturday at 3 p.m. followed by the final at 6 p.m.

Kentucky State Fair

The Kentucky State Fair returns Thursday at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. It runs through Sunday, Aug. 29. 

You can expect ag shows, carnival rides, food, music and more. The Texas Roadhouse Concert Series kicks off with a performance from county music star Josh Turner Thursday. Tickets to all the concerts are free with your fair admission.
