CARLISLE, Ky. — Houses, businesses and storefronts have been destroyed in Carlisle after a storm brought heavy rain and flooding Friday morning. One family-owned business has been around for over 50 years, and lost thousands of dollars after the water flooded their store.

Gladys Shrout said it was a flood like never before.

“We not only lost a life but a lot of our people have lost their belongings, animals, things that they love,” Shrout said.

Starting around midnight Friday morning, Shrout said she noticed the rainfall was rising, calling neighbors to wake them up throughout the morning to get them to safety.

“I don’t know what else you say, you know, we've never had anything like this happen in our community. And a lot of these businesses were destroyed along with the homes,” Shrout said.

Shrout works at Garrett Furniture and coming into work, there were some areas that were as high as her neck, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. 

“This crack right here, see where the door is. It was gushing out like a waterfall. And of course there's already enough – this window, all this debris you see right there that debris has washed up here and knocked these windows out,” Shrout said.

Garrett Furniture had just received a new shipment that filled up three basements, and those items were completely destroyed.

“Those were floating when I stepped on the step when I got ready to open the door. I couldn't get the light on, evidently, it knocked the electricity out in there,” Shrout said.

Carlisle has started a relief fund and item donations at a New Beginnings Church, working to help people and businesses like Garrett Furniture recover.

Garrett Furniture will remain open throughout the clean-up and sell the items that were not damaged in the flood.
