LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Former University of Louisville football star Devante Parker is back in town. The NFL pro held his first football camp in his hometown, training Louisville's next generation of professional football players.

What You Need To Know

  • DeVante Parker is a wide receiver and former U of L football player from Louisville

  • More than 200 children between the ages of 8 and 14 attended the camp

  • The camp was free thanks to sponsors including LMPD and Louisville Metro

The original plan was for the camp to be held last year, but it was postponed due to the coronavirus.

About 225 young football players attended the Devante Parker Inaugural Football Camp. Parker and other experienced football players taught the participants drills and techniques.

The wide receiver has spent many years on the field, but he said it was special to spend time with those growing up in his neighborhood.

“It feels great coming back out here. It’s my first camp in Louisville, and I’m glad I’m able to do it and look forward to doing more," Parker said. "It’s all about giving back to the community, being there for the kids."

The free camp was made possible by a partnership between the Louisville Metro Police Foundation, Louisville Metro Government and a host of local businesses.

“The main goal for my unit is to be out here and to participate in stuff to let the community know that we care. We’re bringing everybody together to make us whole again,” said LMPD Sgt. Tony Sacra.

Another part of the game plan is providing positive role models and experiences to the children of Louisville.

“Hopefully when they get older and they see this and they will give back to the community also,” Parker said.

Participants we spoke with said they enjoyed working with someone who inspires them.

“I feel excited. I like Devante Parker. He’s my favorite football player,” says Rouben Streeter. “I want to play as long as I can. When I get older I want to be a star like Devante Parker.”

Along with new skills, players took home a t-shirt, sports cup and lunch.
