LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Feed Louisville prepares 2,000 hot, healthy and fresh meals weekly to homeless camps.

The operation started as a joint response by restaurant co-founder of 25 years Rhona Kamar and a homeless community outreach volunteer Donny Green when shelters and soup kitchens started closing during the peak of the pandemic.

What You Need To Know

  • Feed Louisville delivers 400 meals to homeless camps daily

  • Food Ching is a new third-party delivery service in Louisville

  • The two have teamed up to raise money for the homeless outreach

  • Feed Louisville also provides the homeless population with clothes and sleeping bags

The two sprung into action and created Feeding Louisville, which is a team of hundreds of volunteers and dozens of restaurants that work together to prepare and deliver hot meals directly to those who might not have one otherwise.

“This work is crucial every day. Homelessness is a humanitarian crisis everyday so people need to have food brought to them… food, water, services,” Kamar said. “Yes, this work will continue post-pandemic.”

Feed Louisville has expanded its outreach to provide clothing, tents, and sleeping bags.

While they are delivering these items to homeless populations, Food Ching, a new third party food delivering service is using its change to help Feed Louisville continue to make one.

“It’s free for restaurants, it’s less expensive for customers, we pay our drivers better than the other services do and we have the Feed Louisville partnership,” Food Ching Louisville owner Gene Stein said.

Instead of charging restaurants, Food Ching does a 15% markup on menu items.

Not charging commission means partner restaurants can save money and give more. Food Ching customers have the option to round their total up to the next dollar.

“$2 supplies a meal to someone everyday. That's huge. That's not a lot of money. Every time you round up your change just a little bit you get to help someone where you didn't have that chance or that opportunity before,” Green said. "That’s amazing for our community. We’re very grateful.”

The main ingredient in the meals is one you can’t buy off of a shelf.

“It’s important to understand that we serve healthy, fresh meals everyday, that our food is made with love and that the people here work very hard to make sure that people get the best possible food that we can put out," Green said.

Restaurants interested in becoming a partner and individuals wanting to drive for Food Ching can find information on how to do so online.
