Co-owners Larry Kezele and Toby Moore said it’s an honor to carry on Ruth Hunt’s tradition.
“She made cream center edges, suckers and caramels. So, all those favorites that you know a lot of are obviously the same recipes as 100 years ago,” Moore said.
In 1921, Ruth Hunt began making and selling her famous candy from inside of her home. She moved into a storefront in 1930 in Mount Sterling, where her candy business took off.
“She started out in her home, making candy for her bridge club. As it grew, friends and family encouraged her to pursue her passion and she loved to cook as well,” Moore said.
Because the candy factory has a post office inside their shop, their factory was able to remain open during the pandemic. It reminded them of the difficult times Ruth Hunt also experienced in the 1920s.
“It reminded me of the struggles that Ruth Hunt had. They had their own struggles, their time during the war, and every time so I think we were fortunate to be able to survive that as they did. We all have challenges, but without the support of the community, it would have been a lot [more] difficult,” Moore said.
Throughout the last year, Moore said it was tough surviving the pandemic, but they're thankful to have loyal customers and community support.
“We got a good strong base of loyal customers who, some visit weekly, some daily. You know, the candy that they grew up with and their grandparents grew up with, it's sort of becoming a tradition,” Moore said.
