  • There will be a grand opening of the Covington Plaza Friday

  • Events will take place across the Commonwealth Saturday for Juneteenth

Monday

The week kicks off with events at Fort Knox Monday to celebrate the Army’s 246th birthday. To celebrate, the General George Patton Museum will reopen its 31W entrance to the public starting at 1 p.m. Monday.

Post leaders will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of the museum at 1:15 p.m. to celebrate the reopening of the gate, which has been closed to the public since 2014. Fort Knox officials say, since then, the installation has installed more security measures, making it safe to once again allow public access through its 31W entrance.

There will also be a greater Fort Knox communitywide Army Birthday Run beginning at 6:30 a.m. Monday. That run begins and ends at Brooks Parade Field. There is also a cake cutting ceremony in the museum’s Abrams Auditorium at 2 p.m. Monday. The general public is invited to attend any of those events.

Tuesday

The Lexington Urban County Council will hold a second reading of the proposed $398 million Fiscal Year 2021-2022 budget. That meeting is at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers.

Thursday

The Louisville Metro Budget Committee will consider amendments to the nearly billion dollar budget proposal. That meeting is at 5 p.m. in the council chambers.

Thursday marks the kickoff of SoulFeast. It’s a ten-day celebration of black culinary excellence in Central Kentucky. It will highlight Black farmers, chefs, food establishments, caterers and culinary vendors in the area. The week features twelve dining experiences meant to showcase Black agriculture from farm-to-table. Participating Black-owned restaurants will feature a unique, off-menu food item for less than $10. You can find more about the festival’s events here.

Friday

There will be a dedication ceremony for the new Covington Plaza Friday. The grand opening event will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

A release from the city says the new public space connects the city to the riverfront like never before in the city’s history. The Covington Plaza features two hiking and biking trails that link to the six-city Riverfront Common s trail system, two overlooks, canoe and kayak access, and a 1,350-seat amphitheater.

“Whether you go to the river to listen to performers from the Carnegie, to walk your dog, to ride bikes with your kids, or just to sit on the steps to watch the Ohio float by while eating takeout sushi with a date, you’re going to appreciate this new access,” said interim city manager Ken Smith. “It’s truly a new era for Covington.”
