LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington Division of Community Corrections is looking to hire over sixty officers for their department.
Matt LeMonds, major at the corrections center says over the last year the city has been struggling to add officers to its staff.
“A bit higher than normal. You know we've, we've had issues with hiring before you know it's something that's seen across the board in corrections, not just here,” LeMonds said.
Over the past year, LeMonds says it’s been difficult in his industry, not only for his department but for officers around the state.
“Before COVID started, there was a bit of a swing in the pendulum as far as the public opinion on public safety in general. And that did impact our hiring the same way it's impacting the hiring at the police department. I know they're going through some stuff as well. And when we see them start to have issues that trickle down to us as well and we see that,” LeMonds said.
Throughout the pandemic, officers worked overtime to keep up with the hours, causing them to take time away from family and friends, making it difficult for some staff members.
“As we get more people hired in and we're doing a lot of stuff to try to get more people in, we can hopefully get more people to work here to be able to spend more time with their family,” LeMonds said.
LeMonds says they are hoping people will give the public safety industry a chance, but only looking for those with integrity and a heart to help others.
“We can’t put a closed sign on our door. We have to be open and operating 24/7, you know, for the safety of those that are here as well as for the safety of the community. We need to make sure that police officers have somewhere to bring people that need to come here,” LeMonds said.
The Lexington Division of Community Corrections plans to host a hiring event every month throughout the year.
