BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Warren County Public Schools (WCPS) is providing meals to families as part of the USDA's summer feeding program.
According to Feeding America 1 in 5 kids across the commonwealth don't know where their next meal will come from. Director of nutrition and dining for WCPS Kelly Holt knows access to meals is a crucial part of food insecurity.
“Were trying to get out and make sure that we make these meals available for as many children as possible." said Holt "We have four sites where they can come and pick up a meal we also have a school bus cafe that goes out to seven different sites in the Warren County area and brings them to people in those neighborhoods."
The four pick-up locations are:
- Greenwood High - 5065 Scottsville Road
- Jennings Creek Elementary - 2617 Russellvill Road
- Bristow Elementary - 6151 Louisville Road
- Jody Richards Elementary - 2100 Elrod Road
6,000 meals in total have been distributed since beginning June 3. Parents like Megan Ormon are appreciative for what WCPS is doing.
"This is big help for our grocery bills in the summer for sure," said Ormon "Tt's something exciting because my kids love to go through the bag and see what is in there we will definitely be coming back."
Parents have even pulled Holt aside to thank him for taking initiative.
"We don't do this for the accolades or thank you's," said Holt "Parents have pulled me over and talked to me and have had tears of joy just for the fact that they are able to provide these meals for their kids.”
