On June 3, 2016, at 9:10 p.m. local time in Scottsdale, Arizona, Muhammad Ali, "The Greatest," died at the age of 74.

The three-time world heavyweight champ was born, raised and came to fame in Kentucky, proudly claiming the title of "The Louisville Lip."

He'd been battling Parkinson's disease for decades, but ultimately passed due to septic shock. His death brought about a worldwide outpouring of support, and his funeral one week later was one of the most memorable moments in Louisville's history.

Shannon Dean met Ali when she was just a baby and he stopped to pick her up out of a crowd. She says she felt special her entire life because of that moment.

When talking about his funeral, she said, "It was just a serene feeling in the city. It's something that if you weren't there, it's something that's hard to describe. The feeling that a city could come together despite whatever goes on in the news now. But that day, the city stopped."

The procession with his casket made its way around the city, including passing his boyhood home. Over 100,000 people lined the streets to pay their respects and the memorial service that followed was watched by billions around the world. Former president Bill Clinton and dozens of celebrities honored his life, including actor Billy Crystal, who said "This outpouring of love and respect proves that 35 years after he stopped fighting, he is still the Champion of the World."

Ali's legacy lives on at the museum that bears his name. The Ali Center provides an ongoing testament to his philosophy that "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth."
