After months of being unpaid, Spectrum News 1 got involved and helped the man receive unemployment benefits.
"Anything beats nothing right now," Page said.
The unemployment dilemma is continuing for thousands of people waiting for benefits. Luckily, there was good news for 60-year-old Page on Monday.
"I’m not worried about paying the electric bill or the water bill or if the car breaks down," Page said.
Page's struggles for unemployment were first reported on April 15. Page, along with thousands of other Kentuckians, lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We sold her truck to raise cash. We sold our travel trailer to raise cash you know to keep eating," Page said.
Jobless Kentuckians like Page have struggled filing for unemployment benefits due to an overloaded computer system and jammed phone lines.
"It’s always easier to just go get a job. [This is the] first time I drew unemployment, [and the] last time I’ll ever sign up for unemployment. It’s a joke. This system is not working," Page said.
Within days of Spectrum News 1 inquiring, Holly Neal, chief information officer for the Kentucky Labor Cabinet, helped Page and his wife navigate the system.
On Monday, Page received 5 checks in his account from the state. The checks totaled $1,872.
"If it wasn’t for you and Ms. Holly, I don’t know if I’d ever get these checks," Page said.
He now sits in his recliner at home with a different outlook on life and a huge weight lifted off his shoulder.
"It’s a lot of relief, less stress. At least I know I got some money coming in," Page said.
Robert said he is waiting on his additional $300 unemployment benefits through the CARES Act which was authorized in March.
