LOUISVILLE, Ky. — With his undefeated favorite, Essential Quality, Brad Cox hopes to be the first Louisville trainer to bring home a Derby win Saturday. But the Derby favorite isn't the only one from Cox's barn in the spotlight.
Mr. Man, a goat that lives at Cox's barn, is full of personality and just like every thoroughbred, he has a mind of his own.
"We’ve had a few goats over the years. It’s good for the horses," said Ricky Giannini, assistant trainer for Brad Cox. "He’s a lot bigger. We’ve had some that are a little smaller and they run around the barn a lot more. He doesn’t run around the barn too much. He kind of moseys down the shed row and does his own thing."
He's more than just a pretty face, though. Mr. Man is there to do his job: keeping the horses calm and ready for racing.
"They find a horse that likes their companionship, so we tried to have a goat around the barn," Giannini said. "He seems to find the nervous one that likes his companionship."
Cox and Giannini hope Mr. Man is the good-luck goat they need to secure the garland of roses and bring the trainer a win in his hometown.
The 147th running of the Kentucky Derby is slated for around 6:57 p.m. ET at Churchill Downs. Essential Quality is currently the favorite with 2-1 odds.
