FORT KNOX, Ky. — Fort Knox plans to build another 21st century elementary school at the installation.
The features and amenities are designed to bolster the education and give students valuable skills to unlock their potential. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have set aside $69 million for the project. Schools on military installations are built to higher anti-terrorism and force protection standards than schools that serve civilians; this impacts the cost, as does the large, open spans and integrated technology that is part of 21st Century design.Community Superintendent Josh Adams with the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) said that 21st Century designs like the Kingsolver Elementary at Fort Knox will help set children up for long-term success.
“The reason these are called 21st Century schools is that DoDEA took a long hard look at the 21st century skills students need when they go into college or the workforce. This building is designed to help students start building those skills now so they have that when they go off to live their post-High School life,” said Adams.
There are currently 366 students enrolled for in-person learning at Van Voorhis Elementary with 69 students learning remotely. The new school is expected to span 104,000 square feet.
