LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department has opened up its vaccination clinic to anyone 18 and older on Wednesday.

What You Need To Know

  • Volunteers are needed to help administer vaccines in Fayette County

  • Anyone 18 or up is now able to sign-up for a COVID-19 vaccine appointment with LFCHD

  • Medical and non-medical volunteers are encouraged to apply

Last week, the University of Kentucky’s Kroger Field vaccine site expanded to accept all phases. With both expansions, organizers are in need of more volunteers.

LFCHD said they don't have a specific number of volunteers needed, but instead they’re looking to expand their pool of volunteers as demand increases.

Georgetown nurse Trina VanGuilder is one of many who signed up to help administer doses. For four decades, VanGuilder spent her days giving injections.

“I used to work in the Emergency Room and gave a lot of injections and I used to work in fertility and gave a lot of injections, so injections were right up my alley. Now here I am injecting,” VanGuilder said.

She came out of retirement just to give back.

"Giving shots was the answer for me," VanGuilder said.

It was her first day volunteering at the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department’s weekly COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Consolidated Baptist Church.

"I actually went through COVID[-19] myself. And so, it inspired me even more to help give the shots shots and stuff so I just started doing it. This was my first time to do it today,” VanGuilder said.

She said both she and husband both became infected with the virus in February.

That experience drew her to sign up to volunteer. The retired nurse said giving shots is her answer to give back her community.

“I think people fear shots and especially if you’re in the medical field, you have the opportunity to help people relax and understand more about why vaccines are so important,” VanGuilder said.
