LEXINGTON, Ky. — More Fayette County Public School (FCPS) students are returning to the classroom.

What You Need To Know

  • Fayette County sixth, ninth, and twelfth graders return to class

  • FCPS is bringing students back i staggered shifts

  • Pre-schoolers and the remaining middle and high schoolers return next week

  • Fayette County is asking for parents to answer questions in a survey

 

The school district is bringing back grades in staggered phases. This time it's grades 6, 9, and 12.

“I think it will be the first day of school. I’m kind of excited,” said Xavier Wolsing, a sixth-grade student.

It’s Xavier’s first day of in-person classes in middle school.

Xavier and his mother Jennifers, spent Monday morning checking off the list of items he’ll carry with him throughout the day. She made sure he had pens, more than one, and a snack. 

Xavier is adjusting to a whole new routine and a school. 

“I don’t know why I’m nervous to go back to school. It’s weird. I think it’s because I haven’t been there before. I’m just not used to the change,” Wolsing said.

That’s because last March, he left his fifth-grade elementary school.

Now, he’s going to sixth grade at Jessie Clark for the first time with a new group of middle school students.

“Yea, I’ve heard it’s been known as a popularity contest but I’m not sure. I’ve never been there but who knows,” Wolsing said.

Next week, preschoolers are scheduled to return to in-person learning, along with the rest of the grades for middle and high schools.

Separately, the school district is also seeking feedback throughout the week from the community on the superintendent search process.
