BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The South Central Kentucky division of the American Red Cross has lost out on many blood donations because of the winter storms last week.
Throughout Kentucky and Tennessee, more than 100 blood drives were canceled resulting in the loss of nearly 2,500 blood and platelet donations.
"We have canceled hundreds of blood drives in 30 states and that had kept us from collecting 15,000 units of blood and plasma so we are trying to encourage the community to come in and fill up the spots in the area blood drives," said executive director Jennifer Capps.
Capps also says that if you are an individual who has recovered from COVID-19 or has the universal O type blood you are encouraged to donate.
"The universal blood type can be given to more patients so we need more of that on the shelves," said Capps. "We really want to make sure that the O type supply is available for those who need it but any donation is welcomed."
Warren County will have a drive set up tomorrow at the Holiday Inn Convention Center and if you are looking to donate you can call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or download the Red Cross blood app.
