The fire department responded to the structure collapse at South Mill and West High streets around 6 a.m. Several downtown roads were closed for hours while investigators started looking into the cause of the collapse.

Major Shane Poynter with LFD told Spectrum News 1 that when his crews arrived, they found the top level of the structure had fallen into the first level.

“We got the area courted off so that no one would get inside the structure. We closed off sidewalks around the structure until we deemed it safe to be around,” explains Major Poynter

Poynter also added that a snow plow truck was on top of the structure when it collapsed, but he was on the other end of the top parking lot and was able to safely move out of the area without being hurt.

The top level of the parking garage fell through to the first level. No injuries were reported and no vehicles were damaged, authorities said.

Lexington-based, the Webb Companies co-manages the building and parking garage.

The Webb Companies plan to take down portions of the damaged garage Thursday and then will begin re-building it in the coming weeks.
