FRANKFORT, Ky. — Originally set to expire Tuesday, the governor's mask mandate has been extended by another 30 days. Gov. Andy Beshear announced this on the eve of opening the new mass vaccination site at the Kentucky Horse Park.

What You Need To Know

  • Beshear extends mask mandate by another 30 days

  • New mass vaccination site to open at the Kentucky Horse Park Tuesday

  • Appointments already booked at the new site

  • Beshear says there aren't enough doses compared to the people who are now eligible for them

Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 2, people 70 years and older can receive their vaccine at the site; however, Transportation Secretary Jim Gray said appointments are already booked. He urges people to keep checking online for any openings.

To illustrate the overwhelming demand for the COVID-19 vaccine there's been in Kentucky, Beshear gave an example. He says a site in Danville recently received 170,000 calls for an opening of 300 vaccine appointments.

"The problem is not that we can’t get a dose to someone. It is that we don’t have enough doses compared to the people who are now eligible," Beshear said.

At this point, the health department's website shows 413,300 doses administered in Kentucky. There are over 30 vaccine sites open across the state so far.

"We all know the difficulty in scheduling a vaccine can be extremely frustrating, incredibly frustrating," said Gray. "In some sense, this is a positive as we go forward because it means so many Kentuckians are actually wanting the vaccine."

The number of coronavirus cases is declining for the third week. Beshear announced 1,623 new cases Monday with an 8.85% positivity rate. There were 35 new deaths reported.

There are more vaccination sites set to be announced later in the week.
