LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Patel family in Northern Kentucky is excited to see Kamala Harris sworn in as vice president and seeing norms being broken.

Punita Patel, originally from India says Harris has broken down many barriers and she is excited to see what the next four years will bring with Harris as vice president.

“To have a woman be president, like the vice president in almost America's 250 years. It's a monumental shift in thinking, you know,” Patel said.

Patel says in 2004, she became a citizen of the United States, she said it makes her proud to see someone of South Asian descent as vice president.

“It’s so nice to see someone who looks like you be reflected back at you in a position of power. It's, it's, I don't even know how to explain it, it's a huge feeling,” Patel said.

Having two young kids, Patel says watching the inauguration Wednesday was a very important and historic moment for the family.

“I told my sons that they're lucky to have witnessed this in their lifetime. This change, you know, not many women have been able to witness this, and they've worked hard to get where we are, so they're very lucky,” Patel said.

The Patel family watched Harris get sworn into office and says she hopes her boys can see on this historic day that they can grow up and achieve anything they set their mind to.

“It's monumental for me to have them see and witness this you know, to experience that not only is there a woman and then a woman achieve this, and she broke all this glass ceiling and became this person of power but that she's also somebody who is from our culture, you know, and so they can do anything because somebody from our culture did something,” Patel said.
