LEXINGTON, Ky. — Small Business Saturday could mean keeping some local shops open in Lexington. One Boutique says this weekend is an opportunity for their store to make it through this pandemic.

What You Need To Know

  • Small Business Saturday is celebrated each year, the day after Black Friday

  • Local businesses see it as a lifeline during the coronavirus pandemic

  • Small business closures are up, revenues are down this year

Jenna Vance, owner of Serendipity Boutique, says this year has been one of the hardest years with the pandemic. With many events being canceled or shut down, they lost a lot of their sales and paying customers.

“Year four has been interesting. So we were closed down with pretty much everyone else. In March and April, which is usually a very, very busy month for us, generally,” Vance said.

Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are two days Vance has been looking forward to for months, encouraging everyone to support local stores this weekend if they want to see small businesses survive during these tough times.

“Small businesses are closing at crazy rates. They just have not been able to survive the shutdowns and the loss of income from everything that's happened this year, so I think for a lot of businesses, us included, if this continues too much longer, we're going to lose a lot more,” Vance said.

Serendipity Boutiques is just one of the many small businesses around Kentucky that is feeling the impacts of COVID-19. Supporting locals can help those community members out during these tough times.

“If you want to see small businesses, boutiques, restaurants things survive, you just gotta put your money out this holiday season," Vance said.
