VERSAILLES, Ky. — It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and all month long, Susan G. Komen Kentucky is partnering up food trucks in Versailles and Louisville to raise money for breast cancer patients.
Susan G. Komen’s third annual "Confections for the Cure" will look slightly different this year due to the pandemic. For the past two years, the fundraiser has been held in restaurants, but with the recent hit to the food industry, Executive Director Amy Pehlke decided to change the focus to food trucks. All of the funds raised will go directly toward helping breast cancer patients financially as they undergo treatment.
“So this year, it was just during the situation we were not comfortable asking restaurants to do this. You know it's just, it's tough on everyone so we thought we would do something a bit more fun, different, unique. And also, like I said, help out the food trucks as well," Pehlke said.
Participating food trucks include, Cookie Dough Bliss, Hip Hop Sweet Shop, SnoWhat Snoballs, and Spotz Gelato.
Owner of Spotz Gelato Beth Richardson says as a company, she tries to help organizations when she can. After losing her mother to breast cancer a few years ago, Susan G. Komen was one organization that hits close to home.
“And there were so many breast cancer charities and great foundations at the time that were very helpful to her during her fight with breast cancer and Susan g. Komen is such a valuable cause to support," Richardson said.
In honor of her mother, she created a dessert called “Tickle Pink Cow," which includes a glass lined with strawberry syrup and vanilla bean gelato, topped with Big Red, whipped cream, and chocolate sprinkles.
“When I was a kid, one of her favorite things to make for us as a treat was an ice cream float. And she always called them cows, and in all of my stores still today. Any floats that we make are called cows, you know, 'cause that's what Mama called them,” Richardson said.
