VERSAILLES, Ky. — It's a favorite activity on hot days, marking the unofficial start to summer: swimming pools.
While many pools remain closed this season due to COVID-19, one outdoor pool at Falling Springs in Versailles is open for business. It's one of the only public pools in the metro Lexington area to open up to swimmers of all ages.
"Everything out here is like a normal summer, just with fewer people and more social distancing," said Richard Pictor, executive director of Falling Springs.
The usual pool rules still apply; however, some new rules are in place to protect swimmers from COVID-19.
"We're only allowed to have up to 100 people at a time, so in order to do that people have to go onto our website and reserve a time block, of which we're doing two hour blocks so that we can get as many people get time in the pool as possible," said Pictor.
The limit on swimmers comes from the Governor's guidelines and the square footage of the pool. There are other precautions, such as closing locker rooms, concessions and drinking fountains.
"I got on the website to see what safety precautions Falling Springs was taking, and when I saw all the things they had in place and how I had to purchase tickets and they were going to have a limited number, I was completely safe, especially with it being outdoors," said Allie Buchanan who visited Falling Springs.
"I'd say it's very safe. Everything is being cleaned on a regular basis. The water is safe. If you take it seriously and you keep your social distancing, you can definitely come to a place like this very safe. It's outdoors," said Pictor.
Despite the new rules, this pool is still making a huge splash.
