STATEWIDE, Ky - Louisville and Lexington health officials are both analyzing new coronavirus data they say is troubling.

Louisville’s health department says there has been a spike in cases among people ages 20 thru 44. Dr. Sarah Moyer, director of the city's health department says increased social gatherings are a likely cause, and encourages those celebrating the holiday weekend to limit the number of events they attend.

"If going out to a restaurant or bar is great for your mental health, please do that," She said on a Thursday video conference with Mayor Greg Fischer and reporters. "But then, please, maybe choose not to go hang out with your grandparents, or in your family gathering, or in your fourth of July picnic that might be happening this weekend."

Lexington, Kentucky's second-largest city, reported its highest single-day community case total to date on Wednesday. The five highest totals were all recorded in mid-to-late June or July. Spectrum News spoke via video chat with Lexington-Fayette County Health Department Spokesperson Kevin Hall.

"What we’re faced with right now is an increase of cases in the long-term care facilities that we didn’t have early on…" he said. "We’re also seeing people going on vacation. Our most recent numbers have indicated to us that – have told us that – people have come back from Florida and South Carolina; both of which have been identified as national hotspots."

Hall said wearing a mask should not be a political issue, and said people are wearing them to protect each other.
