“We want to lift up our city’s spirits, celebrate our patriotism, and just have fun,” Gorton said. “There have been so many things we have had to say ‘no’ to in recent weeks. For fireworks on the Fourth of July it was time to say ‘yes’."

R.J. Corman will host the launch site for the second year in a row.

“Thanks to R.J. Corman. Without them it would be very difficult to have the kind of fireworks Lexington expects downtown,” Gorton said.

While the fireworks as still a go, Gorton stressed that precautions must still be taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“There are lots of places to park. Bring the lawn chairs and sit near the car. Maintain social distance, and wear a mask,” Gorton said.

Lexington Parks and Recreation has ideas to make up for the canceled parade and festivities, including the Bluegrass 10K Virtual Race between July 1 and July 7. The city is also hosting a door or mailbox decorating contest where a winner will be chosen by Gorton.

The Lexington Parks and Recreation's ArtWorks program has also planned different crafts for every day of Fourth of July week.
