BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Bowling Green has 708 cases of coronavirus as of Wednesday. One of those battling the disease is Dr. Rebecca Shadowen, who is with Infectious Diseases, Travel Medicine, and Healthcare Epidemiology at Med Center Health, announced Wednesday she tested positive for COVID-19 and is in the hospital.

Shadowen believes she got the virus after an elderly family member received in-home care from an infected caregiver.

Dr. Shadowen said, “I do not believe I contracted the virus while working in the hospital. Our staff, myself included, have meticulously followed all personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines.” Dr. Shadowen continued, “I cannot emphasize enough that COVID-19 is now widespread in our in our communities. As many of our workplaces and businesses reopen, it is critical we all remain diligent in following the guidelines to remain Healthy at Home and Healthy at Work.”

While Governor Andy Beshear (D) says each night that he believes the state is in a plateau with cases, the Barren River Area Development District (BRADD), which includes Warren County, hasn't seen a reduction or even a slowing of cases.

Connie Smith, President, and CEO of Med Center Health says Dr. Shadowen has been at the forefront of their community's fight against COVID-19.

“The increase is concerning. Dr. Rebecca Shadowen – Infectious Diseases, Travel Medicine, and Healthcare Epidemiology at Med Center Health – has been steadfast in her plea for all of us to practice social distancing, good hand hygiene, and appropriate masking to prevent the spread of the virus.”

Shadowen felt it was important to share her diagnosis to remind the community and everyone reading about her and the virus will take it seriously and continue to practice social distancing and good hygiene.
