LEXINGTON,Ky.—A local nonprofit organization is helping men who are dealing with homelessness by giving them a place to go to during the week.
The men can come to The iron Bridge Workshop and help volunteers by making the products. While the men are at the shop, they have access to a shower, washer, and dryer and even have a home cook meal once they are done. As of right now, the organization only holds sessions once a week on Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon.
“Men have a hard time relating to one another I think sometimes unless they have a project or something around which they can relate to. So this provides that, it's a way for those of us in our community who are, you know, have houses that are financially blessed to get to know some of those folks who struggle a little bit more." Executive Director of Six Treasures Ministries, Robert Littrell said.
The organization started when Littrell's wife asked him to create a cutting board for his daughter, and some of the homeless men who were coming in and out of his house decided to help him put it together.
With the number of volunteers wanting to get involved, there are plans in the future to increase the number of sessions from once a week to three times a week.
"People really want to help, they really do. But they're hesitant to give money, it's hard to know what to do. And when you open up an opportunity like this. We've actually had sometimes more people here, more volunteers than we need. Because people are so interested in helping out and they want to do something, they just don't know what to do." Littrell said.
Some of the items the company produces are coasters, cutting boards, and cutouts of Kentucky. If you are interested in purchasing their items, you can find them on ETSY and in the VisitLex Gift Shop at 215 West Main Street, Ste. 150 in Lexington.
