LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Anna Federico got quite a surprise when she went to school at Mercy Academy. The high school senior was told she won the 34th annual Horsing Around with Art competition sponsored by the Kentucky Derby Museum and WinStarFarm. For her submission, she collected a dozen roses and six box seats to the 146th Kentucky Derby. Also, Mercy will receive $500 for art supplies.
Federico's artwork entitled "Secretariat's Legacy" features the three Triple Crown winners, Secretariat, American Pharoah, and Justify. She used the transition from color to black and white to symbolize the passage of time between the wins. The collage at the bottom of headlines and newspapers helps the viewer understand the history of the horses.
Students from first to twelfth grades from Louisville's public, private, and parochial schools were encouraged to enter the contest and showcase the spirit of the Kentucky Derby using any different mediums. There were more than 200 entries from 30 schools. In addition to her prizes, Federico's art will hang in the Kentucky Derby Museum for one year. All of the winners of the contest will be honored at a special ceremony at the Kentucky Derby Museum on February 18.
