LOUISVILLE, Ky- With Daylight Saving ending over the weekend, people need to roll back their clocks. While they do, the Louisville Fire Department asks that everyone takes this time to check their smoke detectors.
Louisville Fire Maj. Bobby Cooper said, with old smoke detectors, people should change the batteries twice a year. That's how the correlation with Daylight Saving began. Now that many have the new, lithium battery smoke detectors, you don't have to change the batteries twice a year because it is meant to last for ten years. However, people should still take this time to ensure the smoke detectors are working properly.
According the National Fire Protection association, three of every five fire deaths were in a home with no or faulty smoke detectors. That's why Cooper said working smoke detectors are so important.
"There is no doubt that smoke detectors save lives. Just taking a few simple precautions can be a matter of life and death for family members and save a ton of property," Cooper said.
The Louisville Fire Department has a program where firefighters can come out to check and even install smoke detectors for Louisville homeowners. They just have to give the department a call at 311 to get someone to come out and take a look.
