WASHINGTON, D.C. - Kentucky’s Senior Senator Mitch McConnell is making a push to focus on the economy in the wake of President Trump’s controversial phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that triggered an impeachment inquiry.

As House Democrats work to advance the inquiry toward a potential vote by the end of the year, Senator McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy penned a Wall Street Journal Op-Ed Sunday on the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement.

In the article, McConnell calls on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to get over  ‘Trump derangement syndrome’ and move forward with the trade deal for the sake of the country. McConnell goes on to say USMCA would create new jobs and strengthen protections for workers.

It appears this will be McConnell’s strategy in the coming weeks as the inquiry charges ahead. McConnell has said little publicly about the President’s phone call with the leader of Ukraine but did confirm he would not dodge impeachment in the Senate if the House does in fact vote to remove the President from office.

“I would have no choice but to take it up. The Senate impeachment rules are very clear. The Senate would have to take up an impeachment resolution if it came over from the House,” he said in a CNBC interview Monday morning.

McConnell is attempting to shift the conversation to what he describes as House Democrats unwillingness to work with the White House on bipartisan efforts.

According to a CBS poll, the impeachment inquiry has the support of 55% of Americans.
