LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The women who play for Kentucky's Women's Football Alliance (WFA) League team will tell you, they're finally getting some recognition and hard-earned respect. The Derby City Dynamite has been around for several years, but will play at the Tennessee Titans' Nissan Stadium in Nashville this fall.

Female tackle football is making progress, says Derby City Dynamite's quarterback, Felecia Gomez. She's not afraid to get physical, as she calls plays running drills at practice at Louisville's Seneca Park.

“The first time I got hit, I got the snot knocked out of me. I was running with the ball, I didn’t see the defender coming, and she just hit me from the side," Gomez remembers, laughing.

Gomez in the Army, too, stationed at Fort Knox.

"I jump out of airplanes too," she says, "it’s...kind of the same kind of rush, like you’re nervous at first but it just comes natural to you.”

Her teammates range in age, from 18 to mid-forties. They call themselves sisters.

"We just have a bond and we want to keep it," linebacker Tish Baker says. Baker helped found the team, after a lifetime of being told women can't play football. She doesn't deny it's dangerous, and injuries happen. Baker says there have been ankle injuries, a spinal injury, and a torn meniscus, to name a few.

“I’ve had a knee injury. Still going. Moving slower than I used to, but still going," Baker says with a smile.

The head coach does not hesitate to let the chance of injury of his players bother him. He says it's not very different from coaching men.

“Surprisingly, it’s not as much different as people think. It’s still football, that’s how I go about it and that’s how I coach," Coach Roy McMillen says.

Gomez doesn't worry about the physicality and risk of injury. She is excited to lead her team on the field in their first-ever game at the Titans' stadium. She looks forward to the rush.

“The first time I scored a touchdown was like an overwhelming experience, having the crowd jump up, cheering. You just feel a sense of accomplishment that’s amazing. And then the first time you get your first hit or cause a fumble or cause an interception, it’s an unexplainable experience but it’s amazing," says Gomez.

That Derby City Dynamite game is set for Sunday, November 10th, following the Titans' game at home in Nashville against the Kansas City Chiefs. WFA's regular season runs April through July.
