Lawmakers and advocates take a stand against bullying on Staten Island.
Congressman Max Rose (D-NY) has announced bi-partisan legislation called Danny's Law. The bill is named after Daniel Fitzpatrick, a 13-year-old boy who took his own life in 2016 after being bullied. His family started a foundation to raise awareness about the threat called 'Danny's Angel Network Nurturing Youth'.
The bipartisan legislation would establish an anti-bullying round table that studies bullying in schools and consult with local educational agencies about policies to prevent bullying.
Rose says "almost half of the students in our borough report that they've experienced some type of harassment or intimidation from students in their own schools. While bullying may not always lead to suicide, it can contribute to developmental issues and exacerbate physical and mental health problems."
The law would require the anti bullying round table to submit a report about 9 months after being formed, suggesting best practices schools should adopt to end bullying.
