LOUISVILLE, Ky. - This auditorium full of Fern Creek Seniors are not studying math, science, or social studies. Instead, Lily Farmer and her classmates are learning how to change a flat tire and check their oil.

She said, "Hashtag adulting. Because it’s teaching me how to be an adult and honestly I’m not prepared. (laughs) this is going to help me a lot.”

Sara Wilson-Able is the college access resource teacher here. She believes the three-day program gives these young men and women practice with some important life skills. “Figured this would be a great way to spend the last week in high school with them just preparing them.”

That’s where Fern Creek alum and celebrity chef Gerron Hurt comes in. He helped judge a fun little masterchef-like competition using only common foods and snacks you’d find in a typical college dorm room. “Fern Creek is home. It’s a no-brainer." he said. "I graduated here in 2011 and love everything that this school has to offer. Anything I can do for Fern Creek, I’ll do.”

The fun and interactive sessions surprised Farmer. She got a lot out of her last week in high school. Farmer feels more comfortable to study nursing at Bellarmine in the coming months.

But Hurt, has one more ingredient suggestion for these students to add to their adulting cookbooks. “Follow your dreams. Don’t let anyone push you into a certain direction. Always do what your heart tells you to do.”
