The 2019 Samtec RoboRumble Regional Robotic Tournament took place Saturday at Marion C. Moore High School.

The tournament hosted by the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation and coordinated by Jefferson County Public Schools challenged students and teams to design, build, and compete with robots.

The 2019 RoboRumble included four events:

  • RXC Robotics Challenge requires teams to program their robot to solve specific challenges within time restraints.
  • Sumobot Competition is a double-elimination tournament. In each round, two robots will attempt to remove or disable one another while remaining on an elevated circular platform.
  • Live Programming event involves on-the-spot programming. Teams are given multiple tasks at the competition, they then have two hours to build or program their robot to successfully complete those tasks.
  • Robotic Usage has students create a robot under one of two functions; either it is a transformation of another item or it transforms the way one would perform a task.

The contestants have a blast. Jacob Perkins is a Jefferson County sixth grader. He said the tournament is great practice for his future goals.

“I love doing this and it is super fun messing with robots,” said Perkins. “I want to be an engineer when I grow up and this is great experience.”
